Area Templates

Circular areas centered on a battlefield point. A physical template is optional; measure from a die, token, or other center marker when convenient.

Template sizes

General Template Rules

Default area

Unless specified otherwise, the circular area extends 2" from its center, creating a 4" diameter.

Affected models

A model is under the Area Template when any part of its base is inside or touched by it.

  • Measure range to the Area Template's center point.
  • Unless the originating rule states otherwise, the center point must be within the user's range and Line of Sight.
  • The originating rule determines whether the Area Template resolves immediately or remains in play.
  • Terrain does not change an Area Template's shape.
  • An Area Template may extend beyond the originating effect's range after its center point is placed.
  • An Area Template cannot be centered outside the battlefield.
  • Mark the center of a persistent Area Template and leave it in place until the Area Template is removed.
  • A Control Zone is not an Area Template. A Control Zone is measured 2" from a model's base edge; an Area Template is measured 2" from a designated center point.

Blast Template

A Blast Template is an immediate area used by explosive or spreading attacks. Every model under the Area Template, friendly or enemy, is affected.

Determine the attack location

  1. Select a center point within the weapon's Range and Line of Sight instead of targeting a model.
  2. Center the Blast Template on that point and roll the ranged attack once.
  3. If the attack roll includes one or more Criticals (!), the Blast Template remains on the selected point.
  4. If the attack roll does not include a Critical (!), the Blast Template scatters. Equipment and Special Rules cannot add a Critical to this roll for the purpose of preventing scatter.
    • Black die Success: Move the Area Template directly away from the attacking model by the distance rolled on the Green die.
    • Black die Blank: Move the Area Template directly toward the attacking model by the distance rolled on the Green die.

The Area Template cannot move beyond the battlefield edge. If the full distance is not possible, move it as far as possible in the required direction.

  5. After determining the Area Template's final position, record the ranged attack result.

Resolve the attack

Once the Blast Template's final location is determined, resolve the recorded attack against every model under it.

  1. Every model under the Area Template rolls Defense separately and compares its result with the recorded attack result.
  2. Determine Cover separately for each affected model by drawing Line of Sight from the Area Template's center point to that model.
  3. Each Critical rolled by the attacker may be applied to only one affected model chosen by the attacker. A Critical does not apply to every model under the Area Template.
  4. Noise or Alarm caused by the attack originates from the Area Template's center point. NPCs moving toward that Noise or Alarm stop when they reach the center point.
  5. Remove the Blast Template after resolving the attack unless another rule keeps it in play.

Smoke Area

A Smoke Area is a persistent, variable-size Area Template created by Fire Tokens.

  • Smoke is created only by Fire Tokens.
  • One Fire Token creates a 1"-diameter Smoke Area centered on the subject with the Fire Token.
  • Each additional Fire Token increases the Smoke Area's diameter by 1". For example, three Fire Tokens create a 3"-diameter Smoke Area.
  • When another Fire Token increases the Smoke Area's size, replace the existing Smoke Area with the new larger Smoke Area centered on the same subject.
  • Removing a Fire Token does not shrink or remove a Smoke Area already created. Removing one Fire Token from a subject that created a 3" Smoke Area leaves that 3" Smoke Area in play.
  • Removing every Fire Token prevents that subject from creating additional smoke but does not remove Smoke Areas already placed.
  • Smoke Areas remain in play unless a scenario or another rule removes them.

Moving fire and smoke

When anything carrying one or more Fire Tokens finishes moving for any reason, leave its existing Smoke Area in place and place a new Smoke Area centered on its new position. The new Smoke Area's diameter equals 1" for each Fire Token currently on the moving subject.

Resolve this after movement is completely resolved, whether it was voluntary, forced, or caused by an event or another effect.

Smoke and Defense

For each Smoke Area containing the defender, add one Gray die to the defender's Defense roll against both Melee and Shoot attacks. Bonuses from overlapping Smoke Areas stack.

Flare Template

A Flare Template is a temporary illuminated area centered on a Flare marker.

  1. Select a center point within the weapon's Range and Line of Sight.
  2. Center the Flare Template on that point. It does not scatter unless the weapon or another rule gives it Blast.
  3. The model whose base contains the center point is the direct target and is the only model that can suffer damage from the Flare attack.
  4. Leave the Flare Template in place until the end of the current turn.
  5. Each Shoot attack targeting a model under the Flare Template adds one Gray die to its attack roll.
  6. Remove the Flare Template at the end of the current turn.
